People are getting sick! - Please stop the use of toxic chemical herbicides on Baseline Lake.

The initial chemical treatment that was imposed on the residents of Baseline Lake two years ago produced some disastrous health problems for several residents, not to mention dead fish, frogs, and countless aquatic and land based plant and animal life, including pets.

Peace Nick, on behalf of several residents of Baseline Lake, north and south shore, the thousands of people living along the Huron River, tens of thousands of citizens of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and all the wonderful nature in between including the fish, the frogs and other wildlife and plant life that so grace our beautiful landscape. We are strongly opposed to the poisoning of our lakes, our rivers, and our drinking water. It is unfathomable to believe that you would be willing to contribute to the destruction of this fragile eco-system and the continued health risks that such a poisoning brings to residents of Base Lake and beyond - all for reasons of vanity. And we say continued health risks because there is a clear record of health problems that have occurred from the initial treatment of these chemicals two years ago – each and every one with studies showing strong correlations to health problems including diabetes, lupus, and cancer. Since that initial treatment, one resident on the southwest end of Base Lake has been diagnosed with diabetes, another is currently showing symptoms of diabetes, and yet another has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease attacking his thyroid with chronic health issues including severe and chronic headaches whose blood work came back with elevated levels of copper in his blood more than three times the normal level. No doubt it came from one of the chemicals of this highly toxic cocktail used to treat the lake, specifically copper sulfate. On the southeast end of the lake one resident reported that three of his neighbor’s have been recently diagnosed with cancer. One resident reported their dog diagnosed with lupus.

We will not get into details here on the studies of the four chemicals involved. But there are numerous and if anyone would like copies or links to these studies proceed to and click the Environment button.

Briefly though, here’s a run down:

Diquat dibromide – absorbed through the skin, it cause severe irritation of the mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach followed by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, severe drying out of bodily tissues, gastrointestinal discomfort, chest pain, diarrhea, kidney failure, and toxic liver damage

Chelated copper sulfate – absorbed through the skin, causes a metallic taste in the mouth, burning pain in the chest and abdomen, intense nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, sweating, shock, discontinued urination leading to yellowing of the skin, injury to the brain, liver, kidneys and stomach and intestinal linings.

Dipotassium salt of endothall – carcinogenic compound causing cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, neurotoxicity, and acute toxicity.

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid – also known as “agent orange” a carcinogenic compound with links to Lou Gehrig’s disease

The health problems discussed earlier were experienced after the initial chemical treatment of two years. The frightening aspect of this new proposal is the fact that it seeks to increase the level of treatment tremendously from the previous two years and extend it for five years!

There are other more sane solutions.

Weed harvesting is one that works with absolutely no negative consequences.

The healthier more intelligent solution is to ban the use of chemical fertilizers and lawn treatments. They run off into the lake promoting rapid weed growth. In our brief survey, lake residents that do not apply these chemicals to their lawns had very little weed problems on their lake perimeter compared to those that do apply these toxic chemicals.
