Please help honour Mom Winnie Mandela by ensuring that her legacy lives on for generations by signing our petition.

Let us honour Mom Winnie Mandela's legacy by changing the name SOWETO to WINNIE MANDELA CITY. Soweto means South Western Township, the name coined by the apartheid regime. South Africa is now a democratic country hence it is imperative that we rename Soweto to Winnie Mandela City. Mom Winnie Mandela was a powerful struggle icon who was resilient in her fight for our freedom.

Mom Winnie was imprisoned for 491 days mostly in solitary confinement because of her fight against apartheid. When the student uprisings in Soweto started on the 16th  of June 1976, Mom Winnie and Dr Nthato Motlana established the Soweto Parents Association. The two worked tirelessly day and night to assist the youth and parents who had been arrested, injured or killed in the riots. The apartheid regime arrested her for helping people and she was jailed for 5 months and was released in December 1976 without any charge. In January 1977 she was served with a banning order and the apartheid regime banished her to Brandfort for 8 years to destroy her, but that did not demoralize her.

Mom Winnie inspired many generations and said we must always remind future generations that women are powerful beyond measure.
