Michael Espinosa started this petition to Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association

Proposal: Add a third classification system to the PIAA Track and Field Championships, creating A, AA, and AAA divisions, in order to provide more level competition.

Currently, PIAA Track and Field is divided into two classifications: AA and AAA. The cutoff for being a AA school for the boys is having 249 male students or less in grades 9, 10, and 11. The cutoff for being a AA school for the girls is having 240 female students or less in grades 9, 10, and 11.

This means that a school with 250 males and 241 females will compete for the same 8 medaling positions against schools with up to 1445 males and 1529 females. The AA teams, meanwhile, will have a much smaller pool of athletes to compete against for their 8 medaling positions.

Of the 24 sports listed on the PIAA website (combining boys and girls) 11 offer 3 or more classification levels. Track and field has one of the highest participation rates of any PIAA sport and should be divided into more classifications in the PIAA.
