Lori Kwasnick started this petition to Roger D. Bowman, District Mining Manager, Bureau of District Mining Operations Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection

Allegheny Mineral Corporation has applied for a mining permit to conduct noncoal  surface mining activities in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County. The permit is requesting a number of variances to allow mining activities within the Hell Run Watershed. This watershed is designated an "Exceptional Value Watershed" requiring special regulations to protect this vital water source. In other words, they are asking for exceptions to environmental regulations in a location that requires more, not less, protection.

Mining in this area raises a number of concerns for the environment such as well contamination/loss of well water, community heath issues resulting from fugitive dust, chemicals, diesel fumes and noise pollution. Furthermore, we believe mining in this area would result in the loss of habitat for many species, including the wild brown trout that are only found in the Hell Run Watershed of Lawrence County, PA.

We are asking the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to DENY ALL VARIANCE REQUESTS being made by Allegheny Mineral Corporation.
