Jimmy May started this petition to Pennsylvania Department of Eductation

As an underclassmen in high school and being someone who has experienced a close family member and had multiple friends take their own life, I feel that I wasn't properly informed of the signs leading up to suicide.  We were given a brief seminar about suicide and a few signs but it wasn't in detail at all and did not hit the, in my opinion, most important topics.  I truthfully feel that the education of suicide and suicide prevention should be intermixed at an elementary level curriculum.  Due to Covid-19, the suicide rate for both students and adults has spiked tremendously.  The SAVE Students Act (HB 2873) requires that students have access to evidence-based programming that teaches how to combat social isolation, identify signs and signals of interpersonal violence and suicide, and how to reach out for help.  This is only mandated for grades 6-12.  I believe a student is suited for the mental alter of a suicide prevention and education course by third grade.  This could save the lives of their peers, teachers, parents, or even themselves.  When I was in my third and fourth years of school I didn't even know what suicide prevention was.  That, to me, is completely unacceptable and it is time for a change.
