Discontinue all Caltrain service to Atherton Station permanently

The Town of Atherton has decided to pursue a path that could be harmful to the region's economic vitality and environmental sustainability by taking legal action against Caltrain's approval of the Environmental Impact Report for the electrification project.

Electrification of Caltrain would significantly reduce diesel emissions, reduce travel time, and add train capacity.

We do not believe the Town of Atherton has any legal justification to slow the project. The environmental impacts in Atherton are well documented and Caltrain has committed to minimize impacts to trees and to replace the trees that would have to be cut for the electric wires and poles. The improvements in train performance can allow Caltrain to restore weekday service to Atherton.

Since the Town of Atherton has chosen a path of litigation (a legal version of filibuster) , it is time to say enough is enough. Given that the ridership at Atherton has always been one of the lowest on Caltrain, eliminating all Caltrain service there permanently means faster transportation for almost everyone else. The cost of maintaining an underused station in Atherton can be better spent to improve maintenance at better used stops. Caltrain should only serve communities that are willing to partner, and pull out of communities that are working against Caltrain and its riders.

We ask Caltrain to perform an environmental review of a permanent station closure at Atherton, and once the process is complete, vote to close that station, unless the Town of Atherton drops the frivolous lawsuit and instead partner with Caltrain to improve service.
