This petition is in reference to the tragic and condemnable incidents that transpired on Thursday, 23rd February 2017. For your convenience, a brief reproduction of facts is as follows.
Two bomb blasts were reported to have taken place in Lahore by various media channels. Shortly afterwards, all media channels arrived at the hospitals where the injured were being treated. GEO News even reported from inside the ward, openly confessing that despite the fact that cameras were not allowed inside the wards, the reporter had been taking videos from his cellphone, while interviewing the injured. Other media channels also were present in the ward and a full-fledged investigation must be conducted to ensure that all relevant parties are identified.
The reporting is akin to irresponsible, unnecessary fear-mongering that does nothing more than sensationalize the violence perpetrated. It is the responsibility of the media to provide in-depth coverage into incidents by analyzing the context, not by invading the privacy of the victims, already in a state of shock.
It is strongly urged that PEMRA carry out an investigation into these incidents. Such investigation should ultimately form the basis for strict enforcement action against media channels found guilty of engaging in this condemnable practice.
We, the undersigned, request PEMRA to exercise it's jurisdiction in this regard and take immediate cognizance of this grave matter.
