St Dogmaels Wild Gardeners started this petition to Pembrokeshire County Council and

Stop the use of glyphosate-based weedkillers for the routine management of plant growth on roadsides, walkways and footpaths.

We call on Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion County Councils to seek an alternative approach which does not pose a risk to the health of both the people and the biodiversity of West Wales.

Glyphosate-based weedkillers (e.g. Roundup™) are “probable carcinogens” according to the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer. Successful lawsuits in the USA have seen Bayer (the Company that owns Roundup) pay out record damages to people whose cancer has been caused by exposure to these products.

Robust research evidence shows that glyphosate-based weedkillers have a serious negative impact on many forms of wildlife (including bees, earth worms, toads and frogs) even at low concentrations.

As a direct result of these findings, a growing number of councils across the UK have now adopted one of the alternatives that exist to control “weed” growth. Many countries around the world have imposed restrictions on the use of glyphosate-based products or have identified a date, in the near future, when the use of glyphosate will no longer be permitted. This year, Austria imposed an outright ban on glyphosate-weedkillers.
