Stop Charging Fees for Extra-Curriculars at Pembroke High School
Recently, the Pembroke School Comittee has voted to charge for clubs/extracurriculars. The first club will be free, the second will be $25 and if you do 3 or more, or if you have multiple members of a family doing clubs, there is a cap of $50. This decision is going to deter students from doing clubs and extracurriculars because many students cannot afford to pay these fees. Also, some parents will choose to have their kids pay with their own money to do these clubs, which most students cannot afford. Students only participate in these clubs for fun and because it looks good on college applications, so they shouldn’t have to pay. Without students doing these, we will lack a community in the high school. Less students will do extracurriculars, which, in turn, will make college applicants’ applications less interesting and more generic. This will lead to a lower rate of students being accepted into more prestigious schools.
