Nona Van Berkum started this petition to Pella City Council

Recently, a video of protesters taking down a Christopher Columbus statue has gone viral and caught the attention of the national news. After pondering a way I could make a change, I realized Pella still has a street named after him.

Columbus did not intend for exploration. In fact, the two main motives of his voyage were slaves and gold. The Indigenous peoples were, “loving and without greed”. This led him to begin the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. He also began a sex trafficking system that he wrote about in his journal in which 9 and 10 y/o girls were in high demand. Things, however, didn’t stop there. Natives 14 and older were required to bring Columbus gold every 3 months and if they did not bring back enough, their hands were chopped off. If a Native resisted, their fate was to be burned alive, cut off their nose or ear, etc. Bartolome De Las Casas was witness as, “Spanish soldiers dismembered, beheaded, or raped 3,000 native people.”

Naming a street after Columbus brings pain to many Indigenous Americans because of the slavery, ethnic cleansing, and rape he brought to Central and Southern Native Americans. My hope is this can be changed to honor Indigenous Americans rather than a murderer and rapist.
