The Peel District School Board has decided to implement a hybrid learning model for the 2021 - 2022 school year.  This means that a classroom will consist of in person learners as well as students learning at home.  A teacher will be responsible for both groups.

While the board claims this model is the most cost-effective option, it is the model that will cause the most harm to students.  A teacher's attention will need to be split between both groups; this means that neither group will get the full attention they deserve.  There will be no more outdoor learning; there is no way for a teacher to live stream when outdoors and away from the computer.  Art, music, and science lessons will become generic; how can equity be ensured when online learners may not have access to the same supplies?  Especially when supplies are often purchased out of pocket by teachers.  How can teachers effectively help online students solve tech problems when they are also responsible for keeping in person learners safe?  Gym, music, dance, and drama all pose huge difficulties and equity concerns.  Both in person and online learners will lose out.

The pandemic has caused huge gaps in student learning.  It will be impossible to address these gaps when teachers are unable to give students their full attention.  The time, energy and effort required to sustain this model causes harm to all teachers.  There is little to no regard for the mental health of teachers or students.  This model is not acceptable.  It is time to send a message and demand better for our students, our children, and our teachers.  Say no to hybrid learning.
