Why this petition matters

Started by Kayla Andrews

The residents of/ around Walnut Street ask for your support for enhanced safety measures so we can get our mail, walk our dogs, and take our children for walks safely. We have contacted the town multiple times with no success. Please sign our petition to help us make our street a safe environment for our families and town.

Drivers regularly exceed Walnut Street’s (Walnut) 25mph speed limit and heavy commercial vehicles often use Walnut as a cut-through to avoid traffic on Waltham Street. Residents who need to traverse Walnut to hike the Western Greenway, walk to Wilson Farm, or enjoy other activities must be vigilant to avoid passing traffic. To make matters worse, due to the undulating nature of the terrain around Walnut, there is often little or no room on the side of the road to stand when cars/trucks pass by. With cars regularly flouting the speed limit, pedestrians must rush to find a safe place on the side of the road before cars pass by. It is only a matter of time before somebody gets injured. We would all benefit from increased safety on the road.

To make Walnut safer for everyone, we ask that the town government of Lexington, MA support and enforce the following three requests:

  1. Installation of speed bumps on Walnut Street.
  2. Consistent law enforcement of the signs marked on Appendix A, and existing signs prohibiting vehicles > 2 ½ tons on Concord Road.
  3. Installation of more signs to encourage safety at the locations marked on Appendix B.
