Year 11 boys are being made to play rugby, despite some students wishing to play alternative sports that are less violent and are less harming to their physical health.
Among students in Year 11 there have been multiple instances of serious injuries including, but not limited to, concussions, broken bones and dislocations.

Furthermore, many Year 11 boys simply don't enjoy playing rugby, including touch rugby. This removes a very important aspect of doing exercise, which is the mental health benefits, which are vital to students who are undergoing a stressful GCSE year.

A similar situation exists with Year 11 girls being made to play hockey, regardless of whether they enjoy it or not. The same issues exist.

Giving the students a choice to play an alternative sport that may be preferred and more enjoyable reintroduces those mental health benefits. If the students enjoy participating in a sport it may encourage them to be more involved, hence increasing the benefits. It may also lead to them continuing the sport as they grow up and start working, which is a large problem over the world, with adults doing much less exercise than is recommended by health experts.
