Gabriella Guzman started this petition to PCTI and

To the respected principals and superintendent of the Passaic County Technical-Vocational School District, Board of Education, and Freeholders:

On Tuesday, March 26th, 2021, it was announced that the PCTI Class of 2021 seniors would not be having a senior picnic due to CDC guidelines and our class size. Upon hearing this news, many seniors and their families disagreed with a few decisions made. On behalf of my class, I feel inclined to argue a few points as to why our senior picnic should be possible.

  • There is ample outdoor space, such as the baseball and football fields.
  • We understand that the bouncy houses and inflatable structures would be out of the question, as they would lead to unsanitary conditions regarding COVID-19, which is understandable.
  • Food trucks are the only necessity that everyone will love. The food trucks are a safe option because there will be no contamination of the food as it goes straight from the truck to the student. We can also incorporate socially distanced activities such as relay races and water balloon fights.
  • As of now, it is safe to assume that many students in our class will not be returning in person for the remainder of the year. With that said, there is a considerable chance that the number of attendees for the picnic will be relatively low compared to our total class size.
  • Another option would be: a reservation list or tickets to be given out, in advance, for students interested in attending the picnic. This would ensure a set number to be managed accordingly. Since we are allowed to have a movie night event, isn't it possible to apply these same restrictions to the picnic?
  • One of the options given for graduation was to have four separate graduation ceremonies, with every student allowed to be accompanied by three guests. Approximately 200 students would be attending the graduation ceremonies, and if every one of them were to bring three guests, that would add up to nearly 600 attendees per graduation. This number would most likely be more than the number of students that would be attending the picnic.
  • I do not believe this decision was made at the right time since the CDC is continuously changing its regulations, and with the picnic date being more than two months away, I believe there is a chance for change and to still have the picnic.
  • As of recent, CDC has increased the maximum capacity of indoor restaurants and gyms to 50%. This is a fact that applies to being inside, so why wouldn't it be the same if not a more significant percentage when outdoors? *Temperature checks could be done before entry.
  • Should expenses become a major concern, is there a possibility for us to utilize some money raised by the class of 2020 since they did not use it all? However, if this is not possible, then I believe the attendees could pay directly out of pocket, the day of the event.

Thank you to all the readers, signers, parents/guardians, and the school faculty and administration for supporting students' best interests.
