I live just off Hawthorne and bike commute downtown on the two adjacent bike paths. I understand people who say this obviates the need for bikes on Hawthorne but disagree because: 1) too many drivers use Hawthorne as a commuter artery instead of heading over to Powell 2) the double lanes of traffic are far to narrow and commuters drive too fast, often blowing past the many pedestrians waiting patiently at crosswalks.

As a trimet bus driver, I know how dangerous this corridor is in its current form. No one obeys the speed limit, lanes are narrow, and for such a pedestrian heavy area it really needs to be designed for pedestrian and bike safety instead of car traffic. It's got a lot of businesses that attract foot traffic and needs to reflect that reality.

Hawthorne, at the least, should become one lane--it is absurd that it's two lanes, due to the narrowness of the road and difficulty seeing pedestrians at marked crosswalks and the danger this causes.
