PayPal and GoFundMe: Stop Profiting From the Loss of Black Lives

PayPal and GoFundMe: Stop Profiting From the Loss of Black Lives
Why this petition matters
GoFundMe and PayPal MUST pledge to cover all fees for fundraisers related to the loss of black lives to police brutality.
Black people and their allies in the US are fighting against a recent rash of horrific police violence that has roots older than our country itself. Millions of dollars are being raised for the families of individuals who have lost their lives to police violence, and to organizations, that have long been fighting against injustice and oppression. It's unconscionable for these massive businesses to be profiting from the crisis we are facing.
In 2016, GoFundMe made $100 million in revenue.
In 2017, Paypal's revenue was $13.094 billion.
As I write this, GoFundMe has earned $355,224.42 from the fundraiser for Floyd George alone. It's harder to get figures for PayPal donations, but both platforms charge a 2.9% platform fee along with $.30 per transaction, and are clearly profiting massively during a time of pain and suffering for millions of Americans.
GoFundMe and PayPal MUST pledge to cover all fees for fundraisers related to the loss of black lives to police brutality. The same pledge must be made to support the organizations fighting against police brutality and injustice in the US. They must implement a low-barrier method for organizations to be included in this. GoFundMe and PayPal must adopt a policy that promises to cover fees for any future fundraiser for victims of police violence, and they should extend fee coverage for organizations through the end of 2020 at the bare minimum.
GoFundMe has promoted the fundraiser for Floyd George, as it continues to earn them money, without making any explicit statement in support of black lives. PayPal, on the other hand, has been completely silent as countless organizations use their platform to raise funds, and contribute to their billion-dollar business.
Please join me in holding these massive corporations accountable, Corporate America is just as culpable of supporting the toxic status quo in our country, and it's time they stand up and show their support in a meaningful way.
