I learned about this issue via a tweet from @Macklemore who sings "Same Love" and the Fox News report on this issue. I think it is a problem that a teacher was suspended without pay when playing a song about tolerance, specifically about gay rights, but also applicable to understanding those who are "different" than us. I also think it is inappropriate that this teacher was suspended for doing so when at the request of one of her students. I would like for the South Lyon school district to restore the teacher's pay and continue to evaluate how tolerance and diversity are taught in their schools.
- Dr. William A. Pearson, Ed.D., Superintendent
Centennial Middle School - South Lyon District, Michigan
Please pay the South Lyon, Michigan teacher Susan Johnson who was suspended for playing "Same Love" by Macklemore at the request of one of her students.
Susan was allowing tolerance and promoting an understanding of diversity in her class. These values are important in education and society. They should not result in punitive measures such as suspension without pay.
As such, we who have signed this petition request that Susan Johnson be paid for her suspension term and encourage your school district to consider how education regarding diversity and tolerance are taught in your schools.
