Pay our active military during the government shutdown

UPDATE:  A bandaid resolution has been passed allowing a budget extension until Thursday 4/14. Our military is NOT out of the woods yet. PLEASE continue to sign the petition to show your support! We may very well be back in the same boat come Thursday evening.

If no agreement is reached between the bickering partisans, the US federal government will shutdown at midnight on Friday, April 8th. It has been repeated that this government shutdown would not include "essential" functions; however, what many Americans would label "essential" are apparently not considered such by our governing bodies.

On April 7th, the Department of Defense released a memo detailing the effect the impending shutdown will have on our country's armed forces:

"If the government shuts down due to the absence of funding, the DoD will have no funds to pay military members or civilian employees for the days during which the government is shut down.  However, both military and civilian personnel will receive pay for the period worked prior to the shutdown.  Military personnel, and civilians occupying excepted status positions and required to work, are entitled to be paid for work performed during the shutdown, and will be paid retroactively once the department receives additional funding."

Our military personnel overseas will still be asked to put their lives in the line every day, but will not be paid for their services. Meanwhile, the pay for the members of Congress whose bickering will force our government to shut down will receive their regular pay without delay.

Simply put, this is an abomination. Our country's lawmakers have completely lost sight of what is important to the American people. The political parties responsible for allowing it to come to this ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Please sign this petition to encourage to demand that our lawmakers come to a resolution to ensure that our military families do not suffer financially because of partisan politics.

Letter to
U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senate
President of the United States
On April 7th, the Department of Defense released a memo detailing the effect the impending shutdown will have on our country's armed forces. As an American, I am shocked and appalled that the compensation to our men and women risking their lives to protect our country will be delayed in the event of a federal government shutdown, and meanwhile the bickering partisans responsible for failing to come to an agreement will still receive their regular paychecks on schedule. It is clear to me that our country's political parties have lost sight of what us everyday Americans deem "essential services."

I am respectfully requesting that a resolution be made immediately to ensure continued pay for the men and women of our military. It is fundamentally wrong to ask them to serve our country while their already burdened families back home suffer financially.
