In the aftermath of a family tragedy in which three white persons were allegedly attacked (two fatally, one seriously injured) by a Black man, Mayor Brian Henry of Pawleys Island decided to use social media to create greater racial divide instead of bringing a shocked and hurt community together. Henry took to Facebook to vent anger, misinformation, and racialized stereotypes.

Among other comments, the Mayor urged individuals to “rise up” and “treat the Black Lives Matter and Antifa movements like the terror organizations they are.” He reiterated his sentiments calling the alleged gunman “a POS (piece of sh**) who gunned down 3 defenseless white people.” Mayor Henry used the power and privilege of his office to further his personal agenda and spread hateful rhetoric with the potential of inciting violence. This cannot and will not be tolerated by the citizens of Pawleys Island, Georgetown County and all who believe in love and justice.

On August 29, 2020, community organizations including Georgetown NAACP #5520 and South Carolina Solid joined citizens at Pawleys Island Town Hall for a press conference addressing the Mayor Brian Henry’s comments and his ability to lead the Town of Pawleys Island in light of his hateful social media post. A diverse group of citizens called for Brian Henry’s resignation. Join us! Those who believe it is in the best interest of the Town of Pawleys Island and Georgetown County, SC that Brian Henry resign immediately, we ask that you sign our petition.

Thank you.
