The Paulding Board of Commissioners is planning and voting on the 2015 Budget now. And currently, adoptable pets are regularly killed at Paulding Animal Control for needless reasons such as space, treatable illnesses, or shelter stress. A Rescue and Adoption Coordinator could help network the pets out to adopters or rescues more quickly, this would help keep the population down humanely. Additional staff would allow for regular adoption events that would keep the shelter pets in the public eye for adoptions and support. Additional staff would also allow the shelter to care for more pets in busier seasons, or maybe to begin a foster program as many other progressive shelters have done. An updated facility and preventative vaccines would allow for a healthier pet population. Medicines to treat sick pets would allow them to recover and become a productive part of our community, rather than killing them over a highly treatable illness. The bottom line is that we want our tax dollars to go towards life saving alternatives, not killing and disposing of these pets. Currently, dogs can be killed for coughing, or cats for sneezing, as there is not a quarantine area! Provide a budget that allows PCAC to stop killing healthy and treatable pets.
Not only do we value the lives of these pets individually, as life has value and should not be carelessly discarded, but we also value the economic benefit that these pets could bring to Paulding. Pets are consumers! Pet Products and Services is one of the few industries that did not take a downturn with the economy, and in fact, has continued to grow. This industry has more than doubled in the past 14 years. In 2013, the US population spent $55.7 BILLION on our pets. The American Pet Products Association is projecting $58.5 Billion for 2014. Paulding Board of Commissioners - recognize these pets for the important asset they are. Invest in our community and provide an Animal Control department that no longer space kills, nor kills for treatable illnesses, as those practices are a deplorable aspect of the past.
