Petition to paint Donlands crosswalk at Wilkinson Junior school in Pride colours
Why this petition matters

The crosswalk on Donlands street in front of Wilkinson Junior school is in a sorry state. The markings are barely visible, particularly in winter conditions, causing safety issues for the young students who use the crosswalk every day. Members of this petition have frequently witnessed the school's crossing guard struggle to keep traffic under control under these precarious conditions, putting her own safety at risk.
The crosswalk's urgent need for newer, more visible pavement markings provides Toronto-Danforth residents with a singular opportunity to imprint a physical symbol of our solidarity with marginalized members our community onto the built landscape. We therefore request that the crosswalk be painted with the 11 bands of colours associated with Progress Pride flag. In addition to using ROYGBV "rainbow" colours historically linked to the LGBT movement, Progress Pride includes black and brown bands to represent LGBTQ+ communities of colour (QPOC Pride), along with the colours pink, light blue, and white, which are used on the Transgender Pride flag.
In a historical moment when reactionary, fascist movements are on the rise, and incidents of hate and discrimination in our city rise with them, repainting the crosswalk in the Progress Pride colours is a unique opportunity to show the students of Wilkinson Junior where their community stands: for love, for diversity, for belonging, for equity.
Please sign this petition to show your support for this initiative, and if possible, please include your postal code to show Councillor Paula Fletcher's office that this petition is supported by Toronto-Danforth residents who are directly impacted by the requested changes.
