Stop the towns of Burke and Blooming Grove, WI From Being Fully Developed: Save Westport

The town of Burke is a township on the edge of Madison scheduled to be fully annexed in 2036 by DeForest, Sun Prairie, and Madison. It is made up primarily of rural subdivisions, a small business park, and farms. Blooming Grove is scheduled to be fully annexed by Madison in 2024. However, these larger communities have already platted numerous subdivisions and plan to destroy what is left of Burke and Blooming Grove.
- Burke and Blooming Grove should be maintained as community separation zones with farms. The plan is to demolish a sewing shop, at least 10 farms, the historic Seminary Springs tavern, a horse stable, and a driving range. Other communities in the county have established community separation zones, and if this plan proceeds the cities of Madison, DeForest, Cottage Grove, and Sun Prairie will be fully interconnected, which is a problem. It will displace many residents along Hoepker, Vilas-Hope, Portage, and Rattman Roads, and Burke and Blooming Grove contain some of the most fertile farmland in our state, per the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection. If these communities are developed and connected, it will put additional development pressure on our home town of Westport to dissolve permanently and be completely developed as well.
- Burke and Blooming Grove were designed to be RURAL communities. Many residents buy homes or farms in Burke and Blooming Grove because of the rural feel, which will be lost if the county's plan is carried out. Many residents might move away to other communities.
- The whole plan is about increasing the tax base and not about the residents that live there. All each larger municipality wants is more money and a larger tax base. We need to come up with alternative strategies to cut costs and protect citizens of townships in Dane County.
An example of one of the plans is below.
