I come from Watsonville, CA, located in Santa Cruz County. There we had a bin for trash, a bin for yard clippings, a bin for recycling, and even a composting bin. When we moved here 6 years ago, I was surprised Atwater didn't have any recycling programs when both Merced and Winton next door do have curbside recycling. The university of Merced which I graduated from is even one of the best examples of sustainability.

So how can we be surrounded by cities that excel in their recycling and renewable energy and we not have anything. I researched why and found an article from Merced Sun-Star (dated from October 2, 2016) that headlined "Atwater residents on their own for recycling". That article stated that the reason we (Atwater) didn't have recycling services was because the residents didn't want to pay for it. It would have taken then $4.76 more to add recycling to residents' trash services. That $4.76 would send less waste to landfills, create less emissions and pollution, less trees would be cut, less energy would be required, but most importantly it would add years of life to animals, us, and our planet.

Now, I do not know the current price that would take for residents to get recycling in Atwater. I do however believe recycling is something we should be doing no questions asked because it benefits us all in the short and long run. Currently Atwater residents need to haul their recycling to different locations if they want to recycle cardboard, plastic, aluminum cans, steel cans, or any other recyclables. Not everyone can haul their recycling. That is why it is time for Atwater to follow the cities around it and provide curbside recycling services to all of its residents. Please support me in showing the mayor and city council of Atwater that the residents of Atwater want curbside recycling.
