Say NO to gutting Social Security

On Thur., Dec. 8, Rep. Sam Johnson, a Republican from Texas and chair of the Ways and Means Committee, introduced legislation to significantly cut Social Security. The bill would introduce a means test, raise the retirement age, and cut benefits significantly, even for lower middle class workers.
Americans deserve a dignified and safe retirement after contributing to the economy over a lifetime. We want Social Security to remain the successful program it has always been. People's fortunes can change, even in later life, and this program has been there to insure that a minimum standard of living is available. Rather than gut the program, or significantly change it, we fully expect our legislators to enhance the program. One way to do that is to lift the cap, and we prefer that to any cut in benefits. Any attempt to hack away at this beloved program will result in your constituents rising up to get you out of office! We do not expect our elders to suffer the way they often did in the years before Social Security was implemented. Now, when there are more elders without large families, when wages have stagnated, and when pensions are not offered, the need is greater than ever for Social Security to remain a reliable benefit. We paid for it, and we expect it to be there for us, for our children, and for our grandchildren.
