Lucian Bajema started this petition to Senator Patty Murray and

Using coal to generate electricity to run factories and fuel to run cars, ships and planes emit greenhouse gases as a byproduct. When the sun heats up the earth, the heat normally escapes into space but greenhouse gases prevent that. This results in the earth continually getting warmer and warmer. This has many negative effects such as more and worse droughts, floods, storms, heat waves, and wildfires. It can also cause air pollution, wildlife extinction, and higher sea levels as well as other life-threatening problems that can affect all of us. Climate policies are being created in an attempt to stop these emissions but The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that the world would need to cut carbon emissions by 7.6% per year for the next decade to reach the goal set in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. In order to achieve this, we desperately need a carbon tax.

The reason that 80% of energy production in the US is from fossil fuels instead of more environmentally-conscious methods is because it is cheaper. A carbon tax would make products that emit greenhouse gases in their production or use more expensive. This is similar to taxes on cigarettes and alcohol in that it creates monetary reasons to avoid unhealthy products. This tax could be thought of as paying for the environmental damages caused by carbon emissions. This would incentivise people to buy the more environmentally friendly products and would make businesses that pollute less profitable, giving low-emission companies an advantage. This advantage would allow low-emission companies to come out on top of their competitors and would shift the energy distribution from fossil fuels to green energy. All through a simple and reliable tax.

A $50 per metric ton carbon tax would raise federal revenue by $1.87 trillion dollars between 2020 and 2029. This money could be used to reduce other taxes, reduce the budget deficit, invest in clean energy, or it could be given back to low-income families as dividends. All of these options would improve the country.

Our federal representatives need to propose and vote for a national carbon tax to keep our planet healthy and liveable for all animals and future generations.
