Father Zivojin Jakovljevic has been released from his duties as the head priest of the St. Sava Cathedral in Manhattan effective May 15, 2019.  The decision with regard to the release of Father Zivojin was made by the Bishop of the Eastern American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church Irinej.  The decision was made based upon the constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church.  Specifically, Father Zivojin is accused of breaking article 47 of the constitution, which states that hierarchy must be followed and respected with regard to decisions that are made in the church.  In other words, the Bishop has determined that Father Zivojin was not obedient to his hierarch, the Bishop.

Father Zivojin was charged with leading the project of the reconstruction of the cathedral in Manhattan after it was badly damaged in a fire in 2016.  Based on news that are currently available, Father Zivojin refused to release payment to a contractor (company owned by Don Zivkovic) based on the fact that both Father Zivojin and the church board did not believe that the work has been done in accordance with the contract and the necessary documentation was not provided by the contractor.

Before his appointment to the church in Manhattan, Father Zivojin served at the St. Sava cathedral in Cleveland.  During his time in Cleveland, Father Zivojin had a huge impact for the Serbian Orthodox Church in Cleveland and more importantly for the Serbian community.  He successfully lead a large parish as well as the church-school community (Serbian School, Sunday School and "Srbija" cultural dance ensemble).  During his time in Cleveland, Father Zivojin was the driving force behind adding various courses focused on the Serbian language and culture to Cleveland State University.  Father Zivojin also achieved a Ph.D in Eastern European Languages and Literatures from The Ohio State University in 2011.

He is one of very few individuals who have been able to aid in the unification of the Serbian community in Cleveland (which is centered around two very large churches).  He is respected by not only the Serbian community, but by communities of individuals from other religious denominations and nationalities.

We are requesting from Patriarch Irinej, that the Serbian Orthodox Church immediately reinstates Father Zivojin Jakovljevic to his position at the St. Sava Cathedral in Manhattan.  Further, we request that an INDEPENDENT investigation be started immediately into the current situation with regard to the reconstruction of the cathedral.  We are requesting an INDEPENDENT investigation into the use of the contractors for the reconstruction.  Contractors that are used for the reconstruction need to be competing the work on the church based on the executed agreements.
