As we have all heard in the news, there have been serious talks/plans to close Eleanor Slater Hospital. Unfortunately this would be a huge mistake, not just for employees and patients but also for society.

Eleanor Slater is the only long term mental health facility in RI. We take care of patients with serious mental illnesses as well as medical issues such as being on a ventilator. Most nursing homes are not equipped to take care of such patients. For the psych patients, there are group homes but, depending on their illness, they can be denied acceptance. We also have patients who have committed heinous crimes and it would be unsafe to release these patients into society. The hospital has changed from being a “mental institution”. We take care of these people, regardless of their background just like we would family. They become family, we get to know them, joke with them, help them when they are sad or angry. A lot of people would not be able to do the job we do and we very much appreciate our jobs. Just like every hospital, we have worked through this pandemic on the front line to take care of your family members.

Gov. Gina Raimondo and others in administrative would like to close the hospital because it costs a lot of money. Of course it does, it is a hospital. These are people not dollar signs. Unfortunately, the administration and government do not see it that way. These people can not just be released into society in order to save money. Most would not know how to fit in with society now. It has been on the news that there have been “success stories” of patients who have been discharged. Unfortunately, there are more unsuccessful than successful. Some of my patients can’t even tell me their age, where they are, can’t make their bed, can’t regulate their emotions, but they can live in society without proper care? I think not.

Please, if you have a heart, sign this petition and save our fellow Rhode Islanders and your friends and family who are employees here.
