The Disproportionate Exposure of Toxins in Pittsburgh

This petition had 98 supporters

U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works is located in Clairton, Pennsylvania approximately 20 miles south of Pittsburgh. Recently, residents of Clairton, Pennsylvania have sued the U.S. Steel Works for pollution, claiming that not only have their property value gone down, but effects on their health have worsened as well. (Grant, 2017). In the last 3 years alone, the Clairton Coke Works have violated the air permit 6,700 times with pollutants that can cause lung problems and other health issues.

The Clairton Coke Works Factory continues to violate the air permit because they spend less in fines and penalties than they would have to spend to fix the emission problems.

Our petition suggest a potential increase in the fines and penalties attached to violating the air permit that is agreed upon before becoming a working factory.

The goal of this petition is to raise awareness on air pollution that is happening in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and other cities around the United States. This is not a problem that only happens in poorer countries, it is here, alive, and well.
