Dear Governor McCrory,
I thank you for what you do each day in the service of North Carolina. Before you were my governor, you were my mayor. I voted for you.
But many North Carolinians are concerned about the direction our state is headed in public education. As you know, teacher tenure has been eliminated. Master's pay for teachers has been removed. The North Carolina Teaching Fellows program has been discontinued. More than 3,850 teacher assistant will not be returning this school year. And our state's teachers are currently 48th out of 50 states in average teacher salary.
In a letter to Thom Tillis, North Carolina state House Speaker, I respectfully requested that we reopen the door for our best educators by holding on to great teachers now and creating opportunities that attract new teachers for the future.(http://obsyourschools.blogspot.com/2013/08/burger-king-vs-teaching-one-mans-choice.html)
I have yet to receive a response from Mr. Tillis, so I am opening my door to you:
Trade shoes with me and teach for a day.
You could greet the kids with a smile in the morning, take attendance, join in at recess, attend a planning meeting and teach a lesson on the branches of state government.
After you walk my kids to dismissal, you and I could have a conversation in my classroom about your experiences: what you enjoyed, what was difficult, what you learned.
Lastly, you could grade a few papers.
In social studies, we teach our students a lot about revolutions. Maybe it's time we start one. Let's begin a new conversation about public education with you walking in my shoes. Let's trade shoes for a day.
2013 North Carolina Social Studies Teacher of the Year
- Pat McCrory
