In South Carolina sexual assault survivors are not guaranteed to receive their civil rights. Many times they are left on there own to navigate a system that is confusing and broken. Passing a Sexual Assault Bill of Rights in South Carolina will help survivors seek proper help, protections, and care, as well as provide them with the rights needed to begin healing. As reports of sexual assault have only increased in the wake of Covid-19, the 1.4 million survivors in South Carolina need these civil rights protections now more than ever before.

Recently Bill H3487 the Sexual Assault Survivor Bill of Rights Act was introduced in South Carolina. This bill would ensure civil rights to sexual assault survivors in South Carolina who deserve to have these rights when going through such a traumatic time in their life.

I'm calling on South Carolina to pass H3487 and show survivors in South Carolina that they deserve to have a comprehensive, common sense of civil rights.

The key rights in H3487 include:

  • The right to a victim advocate in which all communication stays confidential.
  • The right to be informed of all sexual assault forensic evidence collected.
  • The right to be informed if there are any changes in their case.
  • The right to be heard through a victim impact statement.
  •  The right to be interviewed by law enforcement of the gender that the survivor chooses.
  • The right to be informed of all rights available to survivors of sexual assault.

Without these rights, survivors are left in the dark, scared, hurt, and alone, to navigate a broken criminal justice system. The violation of these rights and having to experience the system and these feelings first hand has inspired us to act and help make change for all the survivors out there fighting this fight.

This is a crisis for 25 million survivors across America, and it's time for our legislators to do something about it.
