Pass a "Schools Alternatives to Dissection Act" in Colorado
Why this petition matters
Please sign this petition to support the Schools Alternatives to Dissection Act in Colorado.
This bill encourages public schools in Colorado to make available and use alternatives to dissection for students who oppose dissection. This bill prohibits penalizing or discriminating against a student for refusing to perform, participate in, or observe dissection.
The alternative project should be nonpunitive and should be reasonably chosen to provide the student, through means other than dissection, with knowledge similar to that expected to be gained by other students in the course who perform, participate in, or observe the dissection
It is not the intention of this Act to discourage the appropriate use of dissection in research or when it provides a valuable educational experience to students.
A version of this bill that has been passed in at least 18 states, including California, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Alabama, Massachusetts, Oregon, New Hampshire and Michigan.
This gives students the choice of whether they want to dissect animals and protects students who object to dissection on moral grounds.
This bill is non partisan and does not cost money to implement. There are cheap/free virtual dissection resources that potentially save taxpayer money and improve learning outcomes.
