We the undersigned request the Development Assessment Officer of Parramatta Council approve the much needed childcare centre at 26 and 26a York Street (DA/686/2018)

The rapid development of certain parts of Epping ensures its rapid and increasing growth in population, most of it concentrated in the main thoroughfares of the area. While this necessarily leads to greater traffic congestion, busier train stations and bus stops, it also means more children of all ages requiring quality education. While the local primary school has expanded to cater for greater numbers of school-age children, what our community needs most right now is an increase in childcare centres for the pre-school aged children. However, this does not mean the rampant creation of the pre-school equivalent of intensive farming battery sheds, distributed willy-nilly throughout the suburb. Rather, it requires the construction of carefully planned childcare centres that are conscious of and respectful to our neighbourhood needs, our community, and our suburb. This includes a conscious decision to build centres away from main roads, to minimise children’s exposure to traffic-related air pollution (see this recent Melbourne University study for details).

The childcare centre proposed for the property located at 26 and 26a York Street (DA/686/2018) will be owned and operated by a local resident who is already a valued member of the local community; she is sensitive to the desires of residents and the needs of their children.

The development is for 70 child care places (including babies) and 16 places for before and after-school care. Its position, away from those main roads of Epping, means that it won’t further contribute to the congestion that already snarls traffic around Epping Station. Better than that, the development plans include provision for a shuttle bus operating between Epping Station, the York Street site, and the homes of children attending the centre, thus further minimising traffic.

No trees will be removed from the premises during the course of its development; on the contrary, the landscaping plans provide for more native flora, natural habitat for the native fauna, thus in keeping with the natural surrounds of the suburb.

The proposed childcare centre will be an asset to the community, and an example of how well essential services can be integrated into the local.
