Charles Broadie is an inmate that has been incarcerated for over two decades. He was a youth at the time of his incarceration, which is no excuse for his actions. Instead of blaming others and everything for his incarceration, he utilized his time to focus on who he was as an individual and how he could better that person. In pursuit of exactly that, he started to educate himself. Before being incarcerated, he was a high school drop out. I could sit here and give you page after page of reasons, explanations, and statistics on how a person's circumstances most often dictates their outcome, but instead of doing that I'm gonna show you, in as little words as possible, an individual who even though he made bad decisions and mistakes in his life took full and complete responsibility for those decisions and mistakes. An not stopping there, but taking himself on a tremendous journey of recovery and self - retransformation.
From the beginning of his incarceration he set out to pursue his education, recalibrate his moral compass and rebuild his character. He began by first obtaining his GED, Associates Degree in Information Systems, Certificates in trades such as Intro to Computers, Basic Carpentry, Small Business Management, Business Accounting(Peachtree), Horticulture 1 & Horticulture 2, Stress Management, Thinking For A Change, Motivation For A Change, Go Further and also wrote and published eight books. And also through self - study he has learned to read, write, and speak Spanish proficiently.
So as you can see he has used his time efficiently in order to educate and better himself in hopes of returning to society as a better individual who can be beneficial to himself, his family, his community and society as a whole.
In his own words, he stated, "The person I've become is the complete opposite of the old me. And I'll be the first to admit that it's a little frustrating and mind wrecking trying to express in a few words what it has taken me over two decades to become and continue being everyday. My journey of incarceration over this time has been priceless. Something that has changed my life for the better and I can honestly say that I believe my unique journey has made me a better man than I would have ever been had I not gotten incarcerated. Saying this is not a reality that I'm proud of, but one that I've accepted and believe to be the truth. It took me losing what seemed like everything to wake up and finally realize that this wasn't the life I wanted. Even after the realization, I had to come to terms with my reality and that was I had committed an unspeakable crime and no matter how sorry I was or how much I regretted it, it was time for me to pay for it. With that in mind I sought to make the best of my time and use it to become a new man, a man that is mature, disciplined, educated, wise, responsible and accountable for his actions, unselfish and knowing that his actions affect more than just him. This is the man I am now and the man I'm proud to be. And it is my hopes and wishes that unlike the old irresponsible and selfish me, I be granted my freedom and become of some benefit to my family, loved ones, community and most importantly to so many of the misguided youth who are on the same path that I was once on."
From his own words one can see that Charles is a new and different person who is committed to first correcting himself and then helping others. This is the kind of individual that our society needs more of so I hope that each person who reads this is compelled to leave there signature to bring home an asset for their community.
