On 15th January we found out we were expecting a baby. We were Over the moon!

Unfortunately, on Friday 22nd January I began to bleed.

The doctors said it was probably just a water infection and to take anti-biotic. On Saturday 23rd January, I was at work so I asked if the nurse could test my urine for a water infection, there was no sign of a water infection and no symptoms of one so that morning I rang the early pregnancy unit at chesterfield royal and they reassured me that this can be normal and said because it’s a Saturday you will have to wait until Monday for a scan because we don’t do scans over the weekend.

The bleeding wasn’t too heavy, so I reluctantly said okay and waited till Monday. We were then booked in for a scan and me and husband had our first scan, a little earlier than normal. Fortunately, at this point Everything was okay with our baby and we could see a tiny little heartbeat and our baby, everything looked normal the nurse confirmed a rough date which was approximately 6 weeks and 2 days at this point we were thrilled to see our baby and thing became so real. After leaving the scan the doctor said if there were any changes in the bleeding to call back straight away.

On sat 6th February the bleeding changed a lot and was heavier with a few pains, so I called the EPU (Early Pregnancy Unit) again and they said monitor for an hour, so I did after the hour I called back as the bleeding was becoming heavier and still had pains, but the nurse said again it’s a Saturday and we don’t do scans over the weekend, so you’ll have to wait and call back Monday.

I said this bleeding is a lot different and the doctor had told me to call back with changes, but she still said no scans over the weekend. I was very lucky, and my husband got me a private scan on Sunday 7th unfortunately as I was walking into the clinic, I had a huge bleed, and it was at this point I knew we lost the baby whilst in the reception waiting for the private scan.

We went ahead and had the private scan hesitantly, Unfortunately the scan result confirmed our fears and showed we had lost the baby.

We then had to call EPU to tell them, they needed to do their own scans which thankful the lady at the private scan did for us as she could see how upset I was. Again, we were informed as it is the weekend you will have to wait until Monday!

This was the most traumatic and heart-breaking moment of our life’s, I know that no matter when the hospital would have seen me we would have still lost our first baby and we do not blame the staff at all.

After reporting my first bleed and being concerned, I had to wait two and a half days these two and a half days were the longest days and most stressful days I have ever had to experience because I did not know if our baby was alive or not.

Once again, I reported another bleed which was heavier and with pains and still had to wait two days before anyone could see me again making me stress and worry and after I had miscarried which was on a Sunday early afternoon, I was told no one could see me till Monday even though I had lost my baby.

We know and understand that no matter what this could not have been prevented but the experience of waiting two days on more than one occasion after reporting bleeding is not good enough and what we are wanting to do from this is to try and change the procedure so that scans can take place over a weekend and there is more of an urgent response if a woman reports bleeding when expecting so no other women have to wait over 2 days to be scanned.
