Continuing funding for palliative patients at home

Continuing funding for palliative patients at home

When a palliative individual is in hospital and wishes to go home to spend their remaining time there is a Fast Track funding that allows them 12 weeks of paid care. Four 30 minute visits a day from community carers. When it approaches the end of the 12 weeks there is a phone review meeting which involves the client, their family, a social worker, a representative from Continuing care and Carers. After a long phone call all the information is assessed and a decision made as to whether the funding should be continued. The majority of the time if the individual has not passed away by the end of the 12 weeks then the funding is pulled. This adds extra stress and anxiety to the individual and their family as not only are they caring for their loved one who is palliative but now they have to pay for their care as well. At the end of ones life the time you spend with them should not be spent worrying about money. These individuals have paid their national insurance and taxes, some have been in the armed forces and fought for their country. This is the same country that now demands they pay for their own care as they are dying. This is not right and needs to be addressed immediately by the Government and Continuing Care.
