Make it a crime to abandon open borewells which have killed hundreds of children

I did not know 6 yr old Kaveri from Belgaum (Kar). She died last night, suffocated after falling in an open borewell. Nor did I know 2 yr old Montu from Sikar (Raj), or 4 yr old Sagar from Rajkot (Guj). But what I do know is that they felt pain, fear and an excruciating death as they slowly suffocated in a dark hole, hundreds of feet below ground.
We in cities may be completely unaware of the phenomenon of borewell digging, which is rampant across our villages and fields. While poor water management is the underlying reason, what cannot be overlooked is criminal act of abandoning a borewell once it has dried up. The open borewell then becomes a ticking time bomb, waiting for its next curious child to come and meet a gruesome death.
Like me, many of you would be parents to small kids. Even if you're not, you know what dying like this would be like, least of all for a scared small child. For the sake of those we can save, request you to sign this petition, asking parliament to make 'Abandoning borewells a crime akin to murder'. If you dug a borewell, you better cover it up once you're down with it.
