The bushfires in Australia are raging. People have died, lost their homes whilst families shelter on the coastline waiting to be evacuated with embers of fire raining down on them. The natural habitat has been devastated - 12.5 million acres have been razed, 500 million native animals have died and farmers have been forced to shoot their burned animals.

In what feels like the apocalypse, we have all been asking how we got to this place where we face catastrophic conditions, which are likely to get worse as the water shortages, drought and fires continue to ravage, and climate emergency policy in Australia remains driven by business interests.

Increasingly it has become clear that the Murdoch media empire (the News Corp) have consistently been responsible for misinformation and political bias that has dragged this country into oblivion. We cannot exist in a functional democracy when an overwhelming large proportion of the print media is controlled by one empire, which is promoting the interests of big business rather than Australian people.

Australia needs to return to a country where policies are debated and are not the subject of swaying public opinion by media campaigns in the service of  special interests.

Our media, as described by a previous Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, is a “cancer on our democracy”.

The media ownership laws need to be urgently examined. It is therefore high time that a Royal Commission is called into the abuse of media power in Australia.
