Hi everyone! I’m writing from Block K3 in Howard Springs Quarantine Facility, NT, Australia. My neighbour is a 32-year-old woman who has completed three negative PCR tests since arriving in Australia on 24th June 2021. Her mother (pictured) is suffering from terminal brain cancer and has days to live.

My neighbour has repeatedly requested an exemption to do home quarantine and spend her mother’s last days with her back home on the NSW Central Coast. Her request has been denied and today, on the 13th day of quarantine, she found out that her mum’s condition has worsened dramatically. Her mum is on her deathbed, while her daughter – after four negative PCR tests – is forced to quarantine in Howard Springs.

We are campaigning for humane exemption procedures for Government-managed quarantine. At present, residents at Howard Springs undergo a 14-day quarantine period that includes four PCR tests: the first before departure for Australia, a second test on Day 1, a third on Day 6, and a fourth on Day 12. We’re asking that international arrivals with terminally ill family members be allowed to quarantine from home after a negative COVID test on Day 6 after arrival at Howard Springs.

In view of our neighbour’s situation, in which every day counts, we request a review of current exemption procedures for individuals with terminally ill family members. We’re trying to gather as many signatures as possible from Australian citizens, permanent residents and supporters. Please help to create a more humane quarantine system for all of us.

Thank you,

Block K3 at Howard Springs: Alison Wright, Antares Wells, Harveen Kaur, Sienna Moser-Verchot, Casey Angwin, Esther Almendros, Hana Kusari, Sibylle von Linde
