End Payment on Publication (POP)

Payment on publication is a new media business practice that is ruining lives and incomes. Publications rely on freelancers, but often accept the work, then hold onto it for months - even years. The freelancer is only paid a month (or more) AFTER publication. Complaining often means they will not be employed again. Shockingly, one in three UK freelance writers are on state benefits - despite often being highly qualified and experienced. Not being paid on time means unpaid mortgages and rents, spiralling debt, no money to live on, and a vastly increased likelihood of mental health problems. Payment on publication is unfair and unethical, and we demand that British media organisations are held to account and forced to change their practice to payment on acceptance of work, NOT publication.
