Companies Should Care - Make community and environmental impact a priority for companies, not an afterthought. Change s.172 of the Companies Act 2006.

Large corporations are quietly influencing everything in our society, from what we eat, to the NHS, to how far our individual voice is heard in politics.
At the moment, tucked away in the depths of the Companies Act 2006, is a tiny line reminding companies that, 'amongst other matters', they must 'consider' their impact on the community and the environment (s.172(1)(d)).
In practice, companies are not sufficiently concerned with this impact. Far from it.
Why? The law allows it.
Currently, under the present law, the number one concern for a company is to promote its own success. This trumps thoughts about its impact on the community and environment.
What about the rest of us?
What about communities that don't want multinationals dominating them?
What about the environment, the devastation of which directly impacts upon our future?
What about small, independent businesses that are being crushed by the homogenizing effect of large companies who destroy competition in the market?
The balance is not right. Things must change. The law can help.
Community and the environment should not be an afterthought for companies, it should be a priority.
