Many children in the uk are battling through life with cerebral palsy. From mild to moderate to extremely severe each child differs. Personally my son has severe stage 5 cerebral palsy effected in all four limbs, unable to walk, talk, use his muscles and has no coordination. As a three year old his life is very difficult and this disability effects his every day life . There is a operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy that is aimed for children with cerebral palsy which reduces the spasticity in there body. This gives them the chance to learn how to use there coordination, can help then become more mobile and in many cases can help them walk whether it be aided/unaided. This operation has only just recently became available on the NHS but with strict outlines. Only children between the stages of 1-3 are able to have this operation Nhs Funded where as the children with stage 4/5 have to fund themselves for the operation. I think it is absolutely disgusting that the children with the more severe case have been penalised aginst. The operation itself in the UK is costing between £20-£30 K, the operation also does not work without strict consistent physiotherapy starting the day after the operation. Physiotherapy also costs around £175 per session which is needed endlessly. How can we give our stage 4/5 children any hope when funds are this extremely high? We are trying our best to fundraise these funds but the 1000s of children who would benefit from this operation may not have the platform others have to raise this money? Why should we have to? Our children deserve a chance, they also should have equal rights like the other children stages 1-3. This either needs to be axed completely or needs to be made beneficial and equal for children of all stages of cerebral palsy!
