Kelly Smallman started this petition to Parliament

Many children are born either deaf or hard of hearing, or develop hearing problems as their childhood progresses. Being deaf or hard of hearing is very isolating and alienating. It is a basic Human Right to be able to communicate and to be understood. Parliament have debated this topic as 35,000 signatures were gathered out of 100,000 on another petition and parliament concluded that even though schools are free to teach BSL, it is not compulsory. We teach MFL, so why not BSL? Why learn foreign languages in such depth when we have not fully mastered one of our own? It needs to be compulsory to ensure that the subject is taught adequately and consistently in all Primary Education settings. A stand alone lesson is not enough, it needs to be taught from Year One upwards, developing each year like we do with MFL. Teachers spend many afternoons teaching children about the Romans or the Vikings, and although this is important, I’d say that using some of this time to teach BSL would be more beneficial and would set many children up for a better quality of life. Please make BSL a compulsory part of the curriculum.
