Reintroduction of Dingoes into Greater Gariwerd (The Otways)

Dingoes are an important cultural species to the Traditional Owners of Gariwerd, the Djab Wurrung and Jardwardjali people. As Australia's only top order land predators, they are critical in maintaining ecosystem balance and function. Rewilding of dingoes is an essential step in returning ecosystem balance.

Dingoes were once established in Gariwerd until colonisation, which lead to them becoming locally extinct. Dingoes, were the top-order predators of the terrestrial ecosystem and also hunted in cooperation with Aboriginal people. Dingoes have an important ecological role and may have the potential to support the management of overabundant macropods (kangaroos and wallabies) and to suppress feral cats and foxes, whose impact on Australia's biodiversity has been catastrophic. Current attempts to control feral cats and foxes are tragically ineffective and has resulted in Australia having the worst mammal extinction rate of any country in the world. Rewilding dingoes may eliminate the inefficient and archaic control methods such as baiting and shooting to allow nature to do what it has always done prior to european settlement.

Despite circumstantial evidence to the contrary, genetically pure dingoes exist in Victoria. Over two years a number of rescue dingoes from the Victorian high country have tested as pure dingoes on the latest genetic testing from the University of New South Wales, based on over 300,000 genetic markers. Dingoes that are pure, and those who have high dingo content, can help to help restore ecosystem balance.

On the topic of risks to agricultural industry, there is no substantial evidence to suggest that predation by dingoes is as big of a threat to livestock as it is stated. Predation itself (whether by dingo, dog, fox, eagle, etc.) accounts for less than 0.01% of the livestock numbers in Victoria alone. More sheep and lambs are lost to exposure (~30% reported) than ever lost to being predated upon, and thus dingoes cannot continue to be exterminated on unjustifiable grounds.

Join us in signing the petition to bring about positive change in Australia; one where we are better connected to the land we live on through respect and understanding. Ultimately, a thriving dingo population is in our best interests.
