Imagine loading up the family, packing a picnic lunch and showing up to your local park for a fun day only to find out for some reason or another you or your child could not access that park. You could look at the bright colored slides and swings. You could observe the pavilion covered picnic tables, but you could not use any of them. What a disappointment that would be?! 

That’s exactly the circumstance that many Sonoma County families find themselves in. Many of our local parks lack proper resources and access for individuals with disabilities. We believe it’s time for that to change! 

    As we talk about accessible parks here are a few examples of what we mean:

Providing paved pathways between different recreational areas (the picnic area and the playground, the swingset and the jungle gym, etc)
Providing adaptive or wheelchair swing.
Providing larger sized changing tables in the restroom in order to accommodate older children still in diapers. 
Providing a ramp for wheelchair access to any buildings or areas that may have stairs. 
Providing a ground covering that is friendly for wheelchairs/adaptive strollers (wood chips are the least accessible for those in wheelchairs and would ideally not be found on any county playground).

    We hope that as we bring these issues or community accessibility to your attention we can continue to work together to make changes and provide a fun, inclusive experience for all.
