Caitlin Kelly started this petition to Parke County Commissioners

In light of the recent tragedy, on Saturday, November 2, 2019, where a van demolished a buggy carrying a family of 4, killing 2, we are collecting signatures to petition the Parke County Commissioners to begin the conversation, and process, of implementing lanes dedicated to Amish buggies.

There have been numerous accidents and deaths, since the 1990's, in Parke County involving motor vehicles and Amish buggies.  The story is almost always the same, a distracted or impaired driver plows into the back of the buggy.  It is time Parke County followed suit with several other counties in Indiana and create buggy lanes.  Areas needing consideration include all state highways in Parke County.  Highway 36 is the best starting place as that highway has been the site for the majority of buggy-involved crashes.

Buggy lanes would benefit more residents than just the Amish community.  Bicyclists are often seen along these highways as well.  Extending the road on both sides will also benefit local farmers driving their tractors and other equipment along the highway.  A young man lost his life while driving a tractor in 2016 on the same stretch of highway 36 where he was rear ended by a dump truck, in the same exact area as the buggy crash listed above from November 2, 2019.

As I sit and type this, the thought of a mother and her baby dying because someone wasn't paying attention is heavy.  We hope you will take this matter to heart, as we do, and start the conversation with a proactive mindset to get something done to protect the taxpayers of Parke County.
