Why this petition matters

Started by Avery C.

Per Florida State University's announcement on October 8, 2020, Fall Commencement will be virtually streamed, rather than in-person. Guidelines have been put in place since the beginning of the fall semester to push for a physical presence on campus.

All 2020 football season, FSU has been hosting limited-capacity games. Less than 3,000 students will be graduating from Florida State University in December 2020. Doak Campbell Stadium can hold 79,560 occupants. This is more than enough space to safely host a commencement ceremony for our graduates.

The protocols used on game days in Doak Campbell Stadium can also be applied to an outdoor commencement ceremony. For example, mask mandates, spaced seating, and consequences for safety violations.

To have football games, and protocols in place to accommodate such crowds, it is the responsibility of Florida State University to host an in-person commencement. While we understand we may not be able to shake hands or invite the same number of guests as in previous years, FSU students and parents can appreciate the significant moment of graduation that we've worked tirelessly for.

It would be remiss to not acknowledge FSU administration's previous commitment to allow Spring and Summer 2020 commencements to be made up. In this petition, we are urging for a solution to be made by Florida State in order to follow through on their promise.
