The sustainable community school model is significant because it includes five critical factors not found in all city schools: 1) Curriculum that is engaging, culturally relevant, and challenging; 2) An emphasis on high quality teaching, not on high stakes testing; 3) Wrap-around services that include health check-ups, mental health counseling, and recreational classes like dance and martial arts for students, families, and communities; 4) Positive discipline practices such as restorative justice and social and emotional learning supports are emphasized so students grow and contribute to the school, community, and beyond; and 5) Transformational parent and community engagement that includes parents as decision-makers and offers classes like ESL, GED, job and leadership training.
