Mrs Browne has been part of Hayes Primary school for the past 4 and a half years.  Her official role is that of Learning and Reading Mentor but most importantly she also provides pastoral care and mental health support for many of the children.  This can be in the form of regular sessions, specialised courses in small groups or one off interventions if the situation requires it.  Her relationship with the children she sees is truly valued, not only by the children themselves but many of the families too.

The parents of the school have recently been informed that Mrs. Browne has been made redundant and will not be returning for the new school year in September.  Indeed it seems that this role has been terminated across all of the schools in the trust.  At a time when mental health is more prevalent than ever this decision by the Spring Partnership Trust seems completely ludicrous.  The children currently receiving Mrs. Browne’s support are devastated at the news and we as parents are outraged.  Our initial inquiries have been met with lack of funding being the reason.  The school’s plan moving forward is for current staff to provide support and referrals to be made to external services as needed.  The benefit of Mrs Browne is that she is available now.   Despite best intentions current staff already have roles to fulfil and we know the same level of support will just not happen. Appointments at external services can take months, and in some cases over a year. They are already extremely overwhelmed.  Mrs Browne already has an established relationship of trust with the children she sees which can be half the battle.

With more children than ever suffering from mental health problems to remove this dedicated role now will surely be counterproductive.

1 in 6 5-16 year olds have a mental health problem, the equivalent of 5 children in a classroom of 30.

75% are not getting the help they need and out of those that do get referred to NHS services 34% are not accepted for treatment.

Failure to provide support at a young age will only result in more adults seeking help from NHS services later down the line.

The role of Mrs Browne should surely be a given not only in Hayes Primary but all schools across the country.  Please support us in getting her position reinstated, thank you.
