We are worried about road safety in Broomhill. We are particularly concerned about the safety of children around the school and nurseries on Beech hill road. As parents we find it scary how fast cars are allowed to drive when the pavements are full of young children. There has been a serious incident and a number of near-misses. We want to do something before a child gets seriously hurt or killed. We also want our children to feel safe to walk or cycle to school. Reducing traffic and slowing it down will also improve air quality and have numerous other benefits for the local community. The school has recently had an application to close the road at pick up and drop off time turned down on the basis that the road provides access to the hospital. We do not think that the fact that it is an access road to the hospital should preclude it being a safe road for children.

We are creating this petition to show the council the strength of support for these improvements.

We have some basic requests of the council:

Reducing the speed limit around the school and nurseries to 20 mph and enforcing this with traffic calming measures such as speed bumps.

Improving the signage around the school so that people know they are approaching a school. Currently the signs are completely inadequate. The signs could be positioned to alert people to the nurseries too.

We feel strongly that these things must be done urgently before a child is more seriously hurt or killed. We are not prepared to simply wait an unspecified amount of time for this to be addressed.
