Parents supporting a full name change for Lee!

We, as parents of Robert E. Lee Elementary School students, respectfully request that the Tulsa Public Schools Board delay the effective date of changing the school name from Robert E. Lee to “Lee school” until a more fair, open and inclusive process is undertaken regarding the appropriate and final name of the school. We ask this for two reasons: 1. Because we believe that changing the name to “Lee” is not enough to erase the original intent behind the naming of the school which was exclusion, and oppression. 2. The decision to keep the name “Lee” was brought about by a small number of individuals who sought a conclusion before a process ever occurred. By taking this approach the name seemed a foregone conclusion and discouraged others from making their opposition heard.
Specifically we ask that the effective date of the name change be delayed until the following occur:
A broader and more inclusive ad hoc committee be formed including representation of the superintendent or the superintendent herself and Tulsa community members at large.
A neutral party with expertise in a relevant area be appointed to host a series of facilitated discussions amongst parents of Lee students, teachers, and other concerned citizens regarding the name, history, racial bias and other topics related to the name change.
A more thoughtful and inclusive process is undertaken to assess parent opinion that includes understanding the difference in opinion by demographics.
The Board takes an additional vote on whatever recommendation comes from the more inclusive ad hoc committee after the above steps are completed.
We respectfully request that TPS assist with resources and other supports throughout the above suggested process.
